Gap Year story
The moped day that needed more than optimism.
The plan was simple: hostel, scooter hire, beach road, back before dark. Then the roadworks started, the phone dropped below ten percent and the rain arrived early.
Gap year kit is not about carrying a heavy expedition bag everywhere. It is about small backups that solve predictable travel problems. Power, documents, basic medical cover and visibility kit do not look dramatic until the day turns awkward.
On this route, the battery pack kept maps alive, a waterproof pouch kept passport copies and cash dry, and the reflective sash came out for the last walk from the hire desk back to the hostel.
The lesson was not to pack for disaster. It was to pack for friction: delays, dead batteries, questionable helmets, sudden rain and the ordinary messy bits that happen between the good photos.
